More Motion Equals Improved Health

Hello—

I hope you’re enjoying the weather and taking good care of yourself. For this issue, I’ve gathered some interesting health-related information that hopefully you’ll find helpful.

Maintaining a healthy body requires attention to many different things. In today’s high-tech society, the easiest one to overlook is getting exercise. It’s easy to equate the word “exercise” with doing something unpleasant or working one more thing into a busy schedule. You can get many benefits out of various forms of vigorous movement, so rather than think of getting “exercise,” why not make time for some activities you really like to do?

You can even get into motion by simply doing enjoyable outings, like going to a park or a museum for an afternoon. Just taking a daily walk in different locales can do a lot for your health and your energy levels.

Exercise and massage have one important element in common: they both get your body in motion. And as a general rule, more motion means improved health.

Much of the media coverage on exercise seems to focus on looking better and losing weight. These are great goals, but apparently not good enough to inspire most people to exercise

regularly. More important results of being active are those that occur unseen, deep within your body.

Why is movement
critical to proper
health?
Just consider
the inner workings of your
body. Like a sprawling
city, you’re composed of trillions of cells that all require and generate energy. When your lifestyle includes lots of physical movement, it’s similar to a well-designed city’s traffic flow—the energy of the city is kept in motion, with everybody able to get to work on time. Deliveries of life-enhanc- ing products get to where they need to be, renovations on older structures get com- pleted on schedule, and the industrial waste is efficiently removed. And like a well-tuned machine, we only notice how the system is working when we get stuck in traffic.

Keep It Moving

All of these internal activities require a constant state of motion. Even while you sleep your body is hard at work, making repairs and preparing for the coming day.

So what does massage have to do with all this? The truth is that most of us don’t make the commitment to use our bodies the way they were designed to be

used. Massage is a great way to put a little motion in your life without even breaking a sweat! While you relax and unwind, your body enjoys the benefits of the countless internal motions brought about by the bodywork strokes.

In Dean Juhan’s book, Job’s Body, he says, “Every part of us is continually undergoing dynamic changes, from liquid ... states to solid gel states and back again as we grow, move, learn, and age, and no single part ever changes its state without sending reverberations out to all the other parts.”

Since massage sessions are full-body treatments, you get the benefit of contrib- uting life-enhancing motion from head to toe—without lifting a finger!

There’s more proof that exercise can help people with arthritis stay fit enough to perform everyday tasks like cooking, dressing and bathing.

In a two-year study of more than 5,700 adults with arthritis age 65 and older, researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago found that the sedentary adults were twice as likely to have to limit their movements because of arthritis than the active participants.

Exercising more—by gardening, swimming or walking—could prevent a good deal of physical decline in people with arthritis, lead author Dorothy Dunlop, M.D., of the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern wrote in the April issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism. Other research has found exercise can also help ease the joint pain caused by arthritis. —AARP Bulletin

The Ultimate Health Drink

One of the most common messages that massage therapists impart is: “Be sure to drink plenty of water!” Drinking adequate amounts of pure water is one of the simplest ways to help your body to be healthier! And what better time to do so than when the weather is hot! If you haven’t developed the water habit yet, read on to learn why you really should.

The following passages are excerpted from an online article written by S. Jhoanna Robledo:

“Health-care providers say water nourishes the entire body. ‘Water is a life-sustaining beverage,’ says Leslie Bonci, a registered dietician and author of The American Dietetic Association Guide to Better Digestion. ‘Every organ in the body needs water.’

“Keeping the GI tract in fine work- ing order
For water to get where it’s needed, it must be absorbed through the gas- trointestinal tract. When you drink water, it travels quickly down the esophagus, through the stomach and into the intestines, where it’s partially diffused into the bloodstream, hydrat- ing the body’s cells. The kidneys and

the bladder make use of some of the water, and what’s left goes into the large intestine to move fecal matter.

“ ‘Water helps flush the system,’ says Dr. Donald F. Kirby, a gastroenterologist and chief of the nutrition section at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, Va. When there aren’t enough fluids in the colon, patients suffer from constipation, a common gastrointestinal ailment.

And one solution to constipation— eating a diet rich in fiber, which can be found in fruits, vegetables and whole grain—can’t work without adequate

intake of fluids. ‘Fiber draws water from all sources in the body to make stools softer and easier to pass through,’ says Bonci.

“Water may also play a role in preventing colorectal cancer. The Mayo Clinic cites a study that showed that women who drank more than five glasses of water a day had a risk of colon cancer that was 45 percent less than that of those who drank two or fewer glasses a day.

“ ‘If you’re drinking enough fluids, you’re moving things more efficiently and quickly so toxins won’t be sitting in your gut for too long,’ says Bonci.”

Wonderful Water

HELLO

How have you been feeling lately? Most of us would allow that there’s always room for improvement when it comes to our health.

One very important benefit you can get from your regular massage sessions is im- proved cleansing of the body at the cellular level. When you think about it, you realize that it would be hard for your body to function at its best if it’s hampered with literally billions of cells that are obstructed with debris—some of which can become toxic to your system.

You’ve probably heard it many times before, but it bears repeating. When it comes to aiding your body in cleaning house, your best friend is pure, plain water. This issue is dedicated to helping you understand the many ways proper hydration is vital to your good health.

Exactly how important is adequate water to your health and well-being? Much more so than most of us realize, considering that approximately 3 out of 4 people are inadequately hydrated. Take a few minutes to learn a few facts that just may have a major impact on your life.

In his book, Your Body’s Many Cries For Water, Dr. F. Batmanghelidj states: “[E]very function of the body is monitored and pegged to the efficient flow of water.” He

goes on to say that some of the conditions adversely affected by dehydration include:

• poor digestion
• rheumatoid arthritis pain
• low back and neck pain
• anginal (chest) pain
• headaches
• stress and depression
• high blood pressure
• elevated blood cholesterol • excess body weight
• asthma and allergies

Dr. Batmanghelidj reported seeing the above conditions reduced or eliminated in many hundreds of patients he has treated over the years simply by getting the body adequately hydrated. How can something so basic make such dramatic changes to your health?

Among its many sophisticated designs, your body is programmed to allocate water based on availability. In other words, if there is a water shortage in your body, the

most important areas are rationed the available water, while other body systems are deprived of the water needed to function properly.

Consider how chronic dehydration can affect your blood pressure. Some of the water is lost from within the cells (about

66%), another 26% is lost from water held outside the cells, and 8% is taken from

blood volume. In an effort to compensate for the loss of

this water volume, the blood vessels tend to constrict, contrib-

uting to the condition we know as hypertension.

What about low back pain?

According to Dr. Batmanghelidj, “Fully 75

percent of the weight of the upper part of the body is supported by the water volume that is stored in the disc core ... The principle in the design of all joints is for water to act as a lubricating agent, as well as bearing the force produced by weight ...”

In fact, water works its magic in many ways. Many important chemical reactions within the body are water-dependent. When water seeps through cell walls, it helps to create a sort of hydroelectric energy that is stored for later use. Proteins and other enzymes in the body tend to function better in more fluid solutions, so being properly hydrated can help your body to do its many jobs more efficiently. To help your body get the water it needs, try to eliminate other drinks from your diet for
the next week or two. By focusing on quenching

your thirst with just water (at least 2 quarts daily), you should begin to see for yourself how being properly hydrated can help you.

regular massage go hand in hand. Bodywork tends to flush toxins and cellular

waste, which are then ready to be eliminated from the

body. Water is the medium that allows your body to accom-

plish this vital cleansing process. So be sure to include plenty of water (espe- cially before and after each massage!) and regular massage sessions in your personal wellness program!
